Esahie Literacy Teacher Training Held at Sehwi Wiawso PDF  | Print |

ImageThe Bible Society of Ghana (BSG) organised an Esahie (Sehwi) Literacy Teacher Training Course for  36 participants drawn from the various churches in the three administrative districts of the Sehwi area. The one week training course was the ninth in the series of equipping people from the churches with skills to teach non-literate people in their churches and communities how to read and write the Sehwi language (Esahie), since BSG embarked on the Sehwi literacy programme in 2002.

Creating Dangme Literacy awareness with brass band processionThe procession, with the Information Services Van in the lead followed by the participants car-rying a banner and placards and the brass band, drew people from their homes and shops to the roadside to take a look at the procession. Some joined in the singing and dancing to the tunes from the brass band music. Some elderly women dancing by the roadside assured me in Dangme that they would enroll in the literacy classes as soon as one is opened in their area.

ImageGhana’s literacy rate according to the official statistics of the 2000 population census is 74.8%. However the Bible Society of Ghana’s experience in the churches across the country show that most church members especially in the rural areas cannot read their own mother- tongue let alone the official language which is English.

Launching of the second phase of the One Million Bibles for JHS was held at Kasseh in the Ada District on Wednesday September 23, 2009 at the Kasseh Presbyterian Church. The guest of honour was the Hon. Alex Tettey-Enyo, Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for the Ada Constituency. The Minister also presented the commemorative 500,001 Bible to a pupil of the Kasseh JHS.

On Sunday July 27, 2009, The Bible Society of Ghana marked the 500,000th (Midway) distribution of the JHS Bibles at the La Bethel Presbyterian Church during the forenoon service. The guest of honour was H. E. Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills, the First Lady, who also gave out the commemorative 500,000th copy of the Jubilee Bibles to a pupil from the Osu Home JHS.
